That little red Swiss Army Knife on your keyring hasn’t changed since you were twelve. Same scissors that only sort of cut. Same toothpick you’ve never once used. Same shape you could pick out of a lineup blindfolded. And that’s exactly why Keyport’s new Versa58 system is worth your attention: it’s the first legitimate way to modify a 58mm Swiss Army Knife without a Dremel, a tube of epoxy, and a YouTube tutorial you half trust.
The 58mm SAK modding scene has been real for years, guys grinding down scales and gluing on clips, turning a Classic SD into something Victorinox never intended. It worked. It also killed any hope of putting the knife back to stock. Keyport built Versa58 as a reversible answer to that, co-developing the Interface Plate with Dominic Lodovichetti of MaxLvlEDC, a guy who’s spent more hours in that corner of EDC than almost anyone.
The system runs on a spring-steel interface plate that snaps onto the knife’s existing brass rivets. No glue. No drilling. No Dremel. Pull your factory scales off, click the new ones on, and the whole thing reverses in under a minute with zero evidence it ever happened. That plate went through seven revisions over fifteen months, which tells you Keyport wasn’t chasing a quick Kickstarter cash grab.

Here’s the part that got me. The same scales that snap onto your knife also connect to each other magnetically through Keyport’s MagMount system, no knife required. Pocket Flare and Pen Scale can click together and ride your keychain as their own two-tool unit while your knife stays exactly as it came from the factory. Swap them back onto the blade tomorrow if you want. That’s a genuinely smarter way to think about carry.
The first wave is five scales, machined from 6061 aluminum or Grade 5 titanium. The Clip Scale adds a real deep-carry pocket clip and keeps the factory toothpick slot. The Pocket Flare packs a three-mode flashlight, 3 to 45 lumens, into 8 grams, lighter than the pen most guys already carry. There’s a Pen Scale with a German Troika refill, and a USB-C storage scale in 64GB or 256GB. None of it adds real bulk to a knife that already lives in your pocket.

Worth knowing before you buy in: this only works on Cellidor plastic-scale 58mm SAKs like the Classic SD, Rally, Jetsetter, Rambler, Midnite Manager and Minichamp. Alox models and the bigger 91mm format are out, at least for now. Kickstarter pricing started at $45 and ran to $199 for the Founder’s Bundle, closing north of 560% funded. It’s shipping now, with pre-orders open for the next run.
I don’t need another knife. I’ve got a drawer full of them like every other guy reading this. But I do have a Classic SD that’s ridden my keyring for years doing nothing but opening the occasional box, and turning it into something useful without touching the knife itself is an upgrade I can actually get behind.
